Dominique Vivant Denon (1747-1825)

After an early career as an antiquarian, author, and diplomat, he became selected as one of the members of the ‘Committee of arts and sciences' accompanying Napoleon's expedition to Egypt (1798-1801). Here, he made a profound study of the Egyptian monuments, which was published in 1802 as the Voyage dans la Basse et dans la Haute Egypte. Denon later became Director-General of the French museums and played an important part in creating the Louvre collections.
