Conradus Leemans (1809-1893)

Conradus LeemansDutch Egyptologist
Leemans studied theology at Leiden University but after meeting Reuvens soon took up archaeology instead. He joined the Leiden Museum in 1834 and became Reuvens' successor as Director of the museum in 1839, a function he continued until 1891. During this long period, Leemans organised the first public display of the extensive collections acquired by his predecessor, wrote a catalogue of the Egyptian objects (Catalogue raisonnée, 1840), and edited the serial publication of the Monumens égyptiens, a detailed lithographic account of the collection which was quite unique at the time.
