Gaston Camille Charles Maspero (1846-1916)French Egyptologist
Maspero studied in Paris and became professor of Egyptology there himself. In 1880, he went to Egypt as head of an epigraphic mission which was later to become the French Institute in Cairo. The next year, he was appointed Mariette's successor of the Cairo Museum, where he started the important series of the Catalogue général. He also served as director of the Antiquities Service (1881-1886, 1899-1914, interrupted by a period in France), where he set up a system of regional inspectorates.
