Willem Dirk van Wijngaarden (1893-1980)
He studied Egyptology and Semitic literature at Leiden and Berlin. In 1925 he became Boeser's successor as curator at the Leiden Museum, from 1939-1959 he was director of the museum. He published two further volumes in the series Beschreibung and wrote a brief history of Dutch Egyptology. Van Wijngaarden led the museum through the difficult period of the war and started the modernisation of the display afterwards. Under his directorship, the Leiden Museum first started excavating abroad and the museum journal Oudheidkundige Mededelingen became an important periodical.
